Little Squaw: Where a good girl goes to rant.
Long time no Squaw. Wednesday, July 14, 2004I was good, I could talkA mile a minute, On this caffeine buzz I was on We were really hummin'... B-52s - Deadbeat Club C'est moi, oui? Quote of the day, "Well I suppose I should go with you. I mean I've already met the love of your life, it's about time that I see the second one..." - Gert regarding attending the Friday show with me and or my other two sassy friends TBD. And my request of the day...I need a Fountains of Wayne fan emergency line...because when I go to shows I end up missing the fact that I have no mega Fountains friends to chatter with. Yes, I have fabulous sassy girls who go with me and that lends it's self to lots of catty, culture and boy chat. But to sound like a bad ballad…nobody knows them like I do. And I have a severe suspicion that I am rather annoying at times. Gilly doesn't even attempt to act interested any more. Hence I was explaining to my L. FOW Friend that he would be the person that comes to mind when I have the urge to divulge my insider perspectives too, mostly because he's made it quite clear that he's accepted his place in mega goofy fandom. Of course if Chris were to lean down and say, "Gee what are you thinking about? You look so pensive!" during the show I think I'd be cured of the need for a hotline. And this would be my overview of my fourth Fountains of Wayne show of the year. I should interject here that I am very well aware of how fortunate I am. It's actually quite obscene that I have been able to see my favorite band so many times. I am a very lucky girl. So the show started at 7PM, but it was downtown and I obviously wanted to get there early. I was planning on going alone but that changed as a result of my former intern (who's currently temping with the company) being very cute the other day. Somehow the show came up and she later emailed me: Good morning! Did anyone ever sign on with you to go to the FOW show tomorrow night? I’ll go if you’re looking for someone to go with you – free music is ok by me! Plus I should probably give these guys a listen so you think so highly of them. :) Let me know what you think! She's so cute. Of course I had every intention of going alone because I know enough not to push my luck with my "normal" friends. It's probably annoying to always be asked to go see a band that you don't really love love love, compounded by the fact that it was drizzling and gross out well, I know when not to push my luck. Plus I really like this girl. She's a real salt of the earth small town girl making things happen for herself. I changed into my "Leave the Biker" shirt and we skipped out @ 5PM to go down to show. Lots of drama on the subway. Lots of emotional baggage for me 'cause, well lest I forget to mention...this was an outdoor show. And the building it was outside of is right on the water next to where the Towers used to be. I haven't been near the footprint of the towers since everything went down. I didn't even realize where I was until I was walking by the space. TOO much baggage for a happy post like this. Anyway we got there and there wasn't any of that free show, no you can't stand there drama. I was a little irritated (please don't get offended my Pittsburgh Jody fan friend)...but I was irritated because it looked like the only place to stand up against the barricade would be infront of Jody. Mind you the place was empty, but it looked like the area in front of Chris and Adam was closed off. Anyway, I am totally a Chris and Adam girl not a Jody girl, which is lovely because if we were all Jody girls there'd be no love for the rest of the band now would there? I was wrong. We totally were able to sidle up right up in front of where Chris would be. It was drizzling and gross and I knew if it got windy and rainy the whole thing would be canceled. Also I was afraid that they were going to sneak an opening act on in front of them. My companion further to be known as Intern S went to get something to eat and to purchase a rain poncho or two (as I was kicking myself because we have like a million of them as a result of a rainy taping in NC that I had to work once)... Okay, this is where things start getting all deja vuish. There was this redheaded girl to my right in pigtails. She was sporting a really cheesy fake red dragon tattoo on her arm and she was wearing a pair of white socks with her sandals. Not that that's relevant but I found both annoying. I am a bit of a decorum snob. Anyway she was kind of loud and I thought that she looked familiar. There were LOTS of little kids. I am talking between the ages of 8-14 at the show. Very cute. Josh the guitar tech was back in the mix (I know everyone especially Gilly was concerned with his absence at the NJ show)...wink wink nudge nudge. They hit the stage right on time. No opener YAY! Comments/Concerns: Jody was sporting super red sunburn on his face, not a good look. How is it possible that Chris looks thinner than he was a couple of weeks ago? Plus he had his hair dyed Billy Idol blonde again which is not a good look. He looked positively grey (skin wise). Intern S kept saying, "I wish he would smile! Why doesn't he smile???" The people around us were obsessed with his two tone green guitar which has only recently made it into the rotation (as far as all the shows I've ever been to). Chris commented on how he used to work on the 35th floor of the building behind him. Everyone looked tired. Jody was doing that leg above the neck of your guitar thing. They started getting really goofy at one point and Chris did it as well. When they came out Adam did another one of those double takes when he saw me. Chris was totally aware I was there as well. Cutest moment? When Chris saw the little kids in front of him he got this massive grin on his face (rare to say the least). He actually WAVED to them (rarer still) and he kept throwing them picks. In fact, he ended up running out of picks before the show was over. Oh, and in Loki's honor (and out of respect for her love of bass players) I devoted some time to staring at Adam’s hands while he played. Which basically meant looking like I was staring at his groin and it just feels totally creepy for me to be typing about doing that. I looked at his totally tone on tone chocolate brown suede Pumas (of the style that my Gilly) wears as well lest anyone think I am pervert. So what about red dragon girl? Well, what are the chances of this...I think it was at the last Tradewinds show we went to; there was this girl who kept screaming, "CLARE! CLARE!" and I was starting to get irritated, mostly because a. she was screaming and b. when she was singing along with the songs she sang LOUDER than the band. You never sing LOUDER than the band. Anyway, even with me being an obsessive know it all in regards to songs and b-sides I had no clue about any song called "Clare". Had something slipped pass me? Well when it got a little less mottled I realized that she was screaming, "FLAIR!" They never played it at that show which is odd because that's a pretty standard part of their set. Soooo, last night the red dragon girl that I thought I knew started screaming "FLAIR!" and eureka I knew who she was. I felt bad because she was standing next to Intern S and I knew that she would be loud. I didn't feel bad that they didn't sing "Flair" even though I really like that song. The rain held off and it was a good show though the band couldn't hear themselves very well. Plus they looked so very tired. "Troubled Times" was missing from the set, probably a result of all the ballads they play from the new album. They did one encore and when they came out for the second Chris said, "This song is for...her!" and he pointed at me as the band launched into "Leave the Biker". The crowd all turned to stare. YAY! Even though it's not my favorite song it's always thrilling to have a song allegedly played for you. Based on the fact that it was a second encore, meaning a lack of a set list, I have to guess that some discussion took place regarding what they would play and when that discussion happened perhaps, just maybe my shirt was mentioned.
