Little Squaw: Where a good girl goes to rant.
Long time no Squaw. Monday, May 24, 2004So it's a Monday. What do you say to that? How about a few random observations?I am extremely irritated with Axel Rose slandering Bucket Head. Don't ask me why but I rather like Bucket Head. I was more than excited when I saw him at the VMA's a few years ago. SO CREEPY! SO TALENTED!!! Anyway if you don't know what I am speaking about then regretfully you needn't be concerned. BUT if you know who he really is please feel free to tell me. I have a few theories. Secondly was starting to get very sad at the thought that John Irving may be incapable of ever writing any more great novels. Because I am infact a very avid John Irving fan. Maybe it's because he plays into my New Englander sensibilities OR most likely it's because I was told once when in grammar school that I was way too young to read "The World According to Garp" so of course I went right out and read it. I do think that I read "Cider House Rules" too early and in retrospect I find it more startling when I remember that the beastiality references were more upseting to me then than the graphic abortion techniques descriptions were. So I was upset, but I think that I have found my next John Irving. I hereby declare Zadie Smith MY new John Irving. For all sorts of reasons but most of all I because she has introduced me to a whole other side of London and the world in general. Her novels portray a multicultural Britain attempting to accept its diversity and history. I read "Autograph Man" when it came out in 2002 and then I realized when we moved last year that I had a hardcover copy of "White Teeth". I don't know why it took me so long to find her but I know that we will be together for quite some time. Not like that lout E.L.Doctorow who chose to use the Hofstra graduation as an opportunity to share his political beliefs with a very large and very captive audience. I've no comment on what he said. That's not the point. The point is it's inappropriate to use such an honorable opportunity to go off on what you think is going on in the world today and to say whatever you please. People can seek that out on their own. In fact that's what being in college, being young, being an American is all about...seeking things out on your own. Maybe I am just angry that "The Waterworks" was such a bad book and it put me off so much that I didn't read "City of God". Now in regards to seeking...I suggest that you go buy/borrow a Zadie Smith book ASAP. Kiss kiss. posted by JustKeepMum on 9:51 PM |
