Little Squaw: Where a good girl goes to rant.
Long time no Squaw. Sunday, January 11, 2004Okay, I am officially packed to go to Puerto Rico and I am exhausted. Mostly because I have to get in a car @ 4AM tomorrow morning to make my 7AM flight. Additionally I am carrying my very very large suitcase which I always overpack yet never have anything to wear and I am lugging a very very very large case of materials down because we were told we needed to bring them and it was too late to ship it all.Need I say ugh? I spent the remainder of the evening exfoliating to the best of my limited ability, painting my toenails (because I was too tired and too anti-social to go get a pedicure yesterday) and admiring the very (very is my favorite word today)...admiring the very large bruise just above my left knee. It's about four inches across and two and a half inches tall. It's coming in quite nicely and I got it while climbing the attic stairs with a box on my head yesterday. We deChristmasfied the house yesterday in one fell swoop. We've got a lot more Christmas gear than I thought as illustrated by all the boxes we lugged into the attic. The tree was easier getting out of the house than it was to get it in and now the furniture is back to it's normal layout which makes it possible for me once again to see the TV. No wonder I spent so much time typing the month of December I couldn't see over the love seat and I didn't want to sit in Gilly's pit downstairs. I am so tired. So very very tired. I am excited about the trip if only because I bought three books yesterday which I cannot wait to read. So much infact that I had to put them away for fear of sneaking looks. One is "Under the Duvet" a book of short articles by Marian Keyes. I am a sucker for British modern fiction. In fact I tend to think that reading junky British trash is much more acceptable than reading junky American trash. Not to say that what I read is trash but honestly I'd rather read about a British girl struggling with the lads who are too cheap to pay for her lager and who soaks her troubles away in a wine bar or spends her weekends eating chocolate covered Hobnobs (one nibble and you're nobbled) under the duvet cover. I love the slang. I love how uninspired they all seem. I love it all. The other is "Songbook" by Nick Hornby...who normally basically writes about the lads who are too cheap or conflicted to pay for the poor bird's lager...this book is actually a bunch of essays as described by the dustcover..."Songs, songwriters, and why and how they get under our skin...a shrewd, funny and completely unique collection of musings on pop music, why it's good, what makes us listen and love it, and the ways in which it attaches itself to our lives-all with the beat of a perfectly mastered mix tape." There's something very endearing about a man in his late 30's early 40's who still gets tipped back to a time long past at the mere sound of a favorite song. It makes me feel normal, comforted and not nearly as odd as I feel on occasion when I feel like I have been smacked in the head at the mere sound of opening chords. And last but not least..."Milk It!" by Jim DeRogatis which is simply..."Collected musings on the Alternative Music Explosion of the '90's." He's a pop music critic for the Chicago Sun-Times. The bands covered in this album make the hair on my arms stand up. I am particularly intrigued by the fact that he's based in Chicago (though originally from NJ)...the fact that there are essays about Chicago acts such as Liz Phair and Urge Overkill is very interesting to me because I feel like I've never read anything "localized" about them. Gil's going to publish my blog for me while I am gone. Meaning the posts that I've written in advance will go up on a daily basis. I'll know if you're not reading and there will be a quiz upon my return. Plus there will be full coverage of all the debauchery I will be part of...in past years I have...taken a boy band to Puerto Rico (including all their shiney shiney suits and sound equipment)...done a body shots with said boy band...had those boys running around in my room in their underthings...one year P.Diddy performed on the first night of the retreat and last year Kid Rock was the guest of honor AND him and Pammy hung out with us all week. Okay, so why does a woman who's bits and pieces we've all seen...why does she wear a bright pink thong bikini on the beach and then wear a t-shirt and sheer skirt to cover it up? HMMMMMM? Talk about false modesty. Plus I am here to tell you that famous people are not so cute in nature. It takes a lot of work. Anyway, it's bound to give me lots of material. posted by JustKeepMum on 8:36 PM | ||
